After Oculus, HTC, Sony and Google have pioneered for Virtual Reality, there are two categories for VR Headset: Host Headset for powerful performance and Mobile Headset for portability. As the market advances into niche, Mobile VR Headset rises up. Mobile VR Headset powers standalone processor and gets rid of wire, it is a all in one headset to give users total freedom to move and play. It is also called Mobile VR All In One Headset.
The first VR All In One Headset is GameFace that features screen and processor for Android, and the first Mobile VR All In One Headset should be GearVR from Samsung. The Deepoon M2 and Pico Neo are two new great Mobile VR All In One Headsets launched in early 2016. But what they differ from each other? We are going to figure out the differences.
As seen above, Pico Neo features an antiglare black plastic material on forefront, and the rest of the device is wrapped with polycarbonate material. So it totally touches very cool. The logo of Pico lies on the left; while Deepoon M2 is divided into two eclipse surface with a Logo and a Breath Lamp on the forefront.
Deepoon M2 features standard screen, standard processor and integrates all kinds of sensors together, that is to say unibody design; while Pico Neo separate the processor memory and screen, meaning separation design. This difference results in different weight, so Deepoon M2 is 48 grams heavier than Pico Neo.
As Pico Neo adopts separation design, so it requires wire to connect with the joystick. One problem is that you will notice the processor motherboard heats up while playing with the joystock. Even without the joystick, you can play some games with PC.
Deepoon M2 takes better care of heat dissipation, breath lamp, touchpad, myopia adjustment, OTG extensions, obviously learning a lot from GearVR.
It is said both will feature mobile location positioning and gesture detection, Deepoon M2 will get this feature yearend 2016, ahead of Pico.
Deepoon M2 has 5.7″ 2560 * 1440 pixel AMOLED display, powers Samsung Exynos 7420 Octa Core CPU, equips 3GB Ram and 32GB Rom and houses a 3000mAh battery; while Pico Neo has two pieces of 3.81″ 1200 * 1080 AMOLED display, powers Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 CPU, equips 4GB Ram and 32GB Rom and houses a 5000mAh battery.
The specifications shows that they have no advantages over each other, and suggest that the specifications doesn’t stand as a problem now, the sensors and the hardware optimisation have got on tracked, but the content and interactions are far left behind.
In August 2016, Deepoon signed a contract with Samsung that Deepoon’s PC headsets and VR All In One Headset will adopt Samsung AMOLED display which will light up in every single pixel actively to reduce latency and faintness. Samsung AMOLED display is said the best screen for VR Headset. In 2016 and 2017, Deepoon will get enough of this display from Samsung.
Deepoon claims M2 has 96 degrees of FOV while Pico claims Neo has 102. But it is very difficult to test this out with human eyes. As long as the FOV is more than 90 degrees, then it can be immersive enough for users. Oculus CV1 has FOV less than 100 degrees, but still delivers gorgeous display. So it is not that the larger the FOV, the better.
VR OS: Deepoon M2 runs VR OS on top of Android, that is to say it is a highly custom Android OS. The VR OS applies the Timewarp core algorithm technology delivering low latency, just like Samsung Gear VR, and featuring immersive UI; while Pico Neo also runs a highly custom Android 6.0 OS that goes with fully immersive UI.
Content: No matter Deepoon M2 and Pico Neo, both are great all in one VR headset, but what makes users love them is the content. A great hardware product should not just exist in the labs, but also in reality and be used by massive people.
Pico Neo comes with 4 games two of which we will introduce hereby. Star Wars is a space shooting gamines like GunJack. And Traffic Jam Terminator is a tower defence game. Pico is bad at the video recommendation and categorises, probably because its content platform was just setup recently.
On the other hand, Deepoon has much more content, not just the amount but also the quality. Deepoon M2 has over 130 VR Games to download and play with. Hereby follows a few examples.
Deepoon M2 also provide plentiful video resources, panorama video including dance and songs, scenes, shock, fun, race and contest etc; 3D video categorises in movie, animation, beauty, experience, music, music etc; games including most downloaded, shooting, adventure, tactic, and relax.
The comparison is obvious. Deepoon M2 has better hardware and more powerful performance, and comes with less shortcomings; while Pico Neo still needs to improve the hardware design. Deepoon M2 has much more content, no matter amount and quality, the VR Ecology seems to forms up; while Pico Neo, again, needs to work harder to get more content available for users.
2016 is the first year of VR era, the Mobile VR All In One Headset will be consumers’ choice out of a tons. You should have made up your mind what kind of VR Headset you should get.
